What is technology?

One day, in my school, there was a debate competition on the topic “technology”, which I think is the most irrelevant topic for a debate (why it is irrelevant has been explained in this blog). Many were speaking against technology. That day, I realized that people confuse technology with the silicon gadgets and high-end automobiles which are just a part of it.

Technology can be broken down into technique-ology which means the study of techniques. According to me, Technology is bringing a new technique to do something in a faster/efficient manner than the ways it is usually done.

Generally, when we hear the term technology the first thought which comes to our mind is electronic gadgets. Is technology only limited to that? Of course not. Due to technology, we evolved from apes to human beings. Technology is the main reason of our evolution as we keep finding the better techniques to survive. That has changed our lifestyle and helped us evolve.

Be it the technique of lighting fire by friction, hunting by sharp stones or growing crops, technology has always been there in human evolution. Therefore, technology has no negatives in itself.

So, what all are these gadgets and modern technologies? Why do they have the negative aspects to them? These gadgets/modern technologies use microprocessor technology that has a large carbon footprint which makes them debatable to use. There are some social issues too, which are caused due to these technologies which highly affect the culture and cause social and mental problems (unemployment and mental distraction of child/youth are the main problems with this modern age technology).

Meanwhile, the benefits can’t be ignored as the amount of efficiency in work brought by these technologies is tremendous. These benefits include easy social reach, better communication, better medical treatments, special technological aids to the differently-abled people and many more.

So, we can say that if we use technology in the correct way, there is nothing wrong. It is not the technology, but it is the users who use or misuse it and that makes all the difference.
